This article appeared today on WTOP.

"TV themes, from "The Beverly Hillbillies" to "The Brady Bunch" to "Cheers" to "Friends," conjure up memories of cozy nights, childhood bliss and a universal nostalgia for bygone days. But, today, show themes are doing a fast fade as the networks crunch their programming budgets." See full article at: http://wtop.com/?nid=114&sid=947244

Interesting piece. Thanks for sharing it. I love how the old songs gave the set-up for the show.

I meant how they set up the premise:

It's the story, of a man named Brady.
Branded!
There's a little hotel called the Shady Rest at the junction.
They're the modern stone age family.
Five passengers set sail that day for a three hour tour.
Because they're cousins, identical cousins all the way.
The ship sailed on and on and on and on...

That's what my example was intending to illustrate also. For anyone who didn't recognize it, that's the theme song to Mystery Science Theatre 3000, which was all about explaining the premise.

Yup. Written and performed by Harry Nillson, IIRC.

"Here he comes, here comes Speed Racer - hes a demon on wheels"

"Ladies and gentlemen, the story you're about to hear is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent."

"A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And no one can talk to a horse of course
That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mister Ed."

" Five of us, and mom working all day,
We knew we could help her if our music could pay."

" Gentlemen We can rebuild him.
We have the technology."

Live action movie just announced ! Speed Racer is coming back! So is UltraMan by the way.

Networks have started using "squeeze backs" for the show credits so they can jam promos and more advertising into a minute. It ticks off the production companies to no end but not much they can do about it. The credits roll by so fast that they might as well do away with it. ( and that IS coming) This is the space formally reserved for the theme songs. In another couple of years, there will be no more credits after a show at all, just a quick slam into a 4 minute stack of commercials and then on to the next show. In some cases it will be difficult for you to tell when one show ends and another starts. Soon after, most programs will be sent over the net and NOT over the air waves. Then the tv networks will truely be dead.
Just FYI, I work for one of those "doomed" networks and I aint happy with the way things are headed!

Tombstone Territory:

"Whistle me up a memory,
Of Tombstone Territory"

Even the credits are getting eliminated or "squeezed back" to half a screen. Its all about the money.

"You woke up this morning, got yourself a gun
Your mama always said you'd be the chosen one."

Oops. That's a recent one.
