Some of you who live in Annandale might remember the large siren that was mounted on a high tower behind the fire station. Whenever fire engines needed to be dispatched, the siren would go off warning the volunteer firemen to report for duty. As this siren was situated right next to the Annandale Elementary play field, I was often subjected to it's deafening wail - and let me tell you, it WAS LOUD. My grandmother hated that siren because it reminded her of the air raid sirens in WWII. That thing seemed to go off at all hours of the day and night, and I supposed I eventually tuned it out. I think they finally ditched the siren in the 1980s in favor of more sensible communication.

My old elementary school, Rolling Valley, had an air raid siren mounted out in the baseball field adjacent to the playground. It was tested monthly while school was in session and could be heard throughout the entire neighborhood. This would have been in the early 1970's.
